Sacrificial Stewardship
(First in a Series of Three Sermons on Stewardship)
September 27 and 28,2008
Mark 12: 41-44 - "Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on."

Last week, if you remember, we talked about God, Our Creator. And as an illustration, I used the image of children; children at an Easter egg hunt. Remember that? Well, if not, I used the illustration in a positive way. I spoke of how children will cherish, or value each and every egg. Not stopping the search until each on is found.

Well, tonight, I'd like to lean on that same image, only this time, in a not so positive light. Picture those children once again, and think of them all running through the yard. Each one has a full basket. Each one desperately looking for…looking for…looking for, what?
More. They want more, right? And they certainly won't stop until all the eggs are found.
